What is nail fungus and toenail fungus?
The medical name for toenail fungus or nail infection is Onychomycosis or Tinea Unguium. Toenail infections are quite common and account for approximately one third of all fungal skin infections and half of all nail disease. Approximately 10-12 percent of the population has the presence of a toenail or nail fungus infection. However this number is based on the number of reported cases. The actual prevelance of toenail fungus is probably between 20-25 percent. Because toenail fungus or nail fungus can be unsightly and embarrassing it commonly goes unreported. When the toenail or nail becomes infected, the common organism is a fungus however; in many cases there is also the presence of bacteria.
The toenail fungus develops as the infection grows in the nail bed, matrix or nail plate. As the toenail fungus grows it produces nail discoloration (usually yellow and sometimes black) and a change in texture of the nail. Nails can become brittle and crumbly and may break easily. Frequently the nail will grow irregularly. Toenail fungus and nail fungus are not simply a cosmetic problem. Without treatment they can result in secondary problems, like pain, recurring ingrown toenails, decreased circulation or secondary systemic fungal or bacterial infections on the skin. In severe cases the fungus or bacteria can spread to the blood system and cause a systemic infection. Other nail conditions can appear similar to toenail fungus, therefore to confirm the diagnosis; a sample of the nail must be examined in a laboratory.
What causes toenail fungus or nail infections?
Toenail fungus or nail fungus infections are typically caused by various fungi such as dermatophytes, mold or yeast, however in up to 50% of cases, there is also the presence of bacteria. The fungal infection usually occurs in people who wear constrictive footwear, or share locker rooms, showers or bathrooms with others. A warm environment, an accumulation of water around and under the nail and a low oxygen environment provide optimal conditions for the fungus to grow. This is why fungal infections are much more common on the toes. Using nail or toenail polish can make it difficult for the nails to breath and may promote the growth of the fungus. Fungal infections can be contagious; however they do not spread easily between people unless conditions are favorable such as in locker rooms or when sharing footwear with others. If not treated promptly, the infection can spread to other nails. It can also be cross contaminated from the toenails to the fingernails by contact or by using nail clippers. Beware- Nail salons that do not properly sterilize their equipment can transfer toenail fungus or nail fungus and bacteria to other patrons.
Toenail fungus or nail fungus commonly occurs in people whose immune system "allow" the fungus to become established. In other words, people whose immune system is not functioning at optimal levels are much more likely to become infected, however, many healthy people also contract toenail or nail fungal infections. Poor circulation to the feet can also increase the susceptibility of infection. Poor nutritional habits can also lead to a proliferation of fungus in the body. It is best to avoid foods high in simple carbohydrates and sugars and increase consumption of vegetables and high fiber foods.
What can be done to prevent toenail fungus or nail infections?
• Keep your feet dry, avoiding constant moisture.
• Avoid non-porous, closed shoes made of synthetic materials or rubber shoes.
• Wearing absorbent socks preferably white cotton breathable socks.
• Wear water proof sandals when in public showers or locker rooms.
• Avoid and treat the presence of Athlete's foot fungus which can lead to infected nails.
• Do not share nail clippers or attend nail salons that do not sanitize equipment.
• Treat infected toe nails as soon as there is any evidence of infection. This will help minimize the length of treatment required, prevent further discoloration, prevent spread to other toenails or to the fingers and minimize symptoms.
What is the current treatment for toenail fungus or nail fungus?
Toenail fungus or nail fungus can be treated with natural medicine or by conventional medicine.
The conventional medical treatment for toenail fungus or nail fungus infection is a prescription of very strong anti-fungal medications to be taken internally. Currently there is only a 40-60% success rate and there are many side effects to these medications. These oral anti-fungal medications must be taken continuously for several months in order to be effective. One of the reasons that these medications may not be very successful is that they only attack fungus and many nail infections include the presence of bacteria. Remember, when looking up these medications the medical name fo the condition is Onychomycosis.
Pharmaceutical anti-fungal drugs have potential side effects on other body organs (especially the liver, gastrointestinal, skin, or bone marrow). To monitor for side effects, periodic blood testing must be obtained, usually monthly, during the time you take the medication. See our articles regarding SIDE EFFECTS OF PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS as there are too many to list here.
Common symptoms of anti-fungal medication which may indicate organ damage are unusual fatigue, severe loss of appetite, nausea, yellow eyes (jaundice-from damage to the liver), dark urine, pale stool, skin rashes, bleeding, enlarged lymph glands, or signs of infection. Studies suggest that in those patients that seem to improve from prescription medications at least 1 in 5 (20%) will have a reoccurrence of the original nail infection at some time, and re-treatment with medication would be necessary. Current topical anti-fungal prescription medications have even lower success rates.
Fungus Research, L.L.C. has developed a potent natural anti-fungal internal formula called Mycozil which is designed to attack toenail fungus and nail fungus through the bloodstream and directly at the site of the nail infection. This natural formula has been proven effective against the fungus that causes toenail infections and can be used without the worry of side effects commonly seen with prescription anti-fungal medications. Should I take prescription medication for toenail fungus or nail fungus?
Doctors usually recommend treating toenail fungus or nail fungus only when the infection causes symptoms, and often will discourage treatment because of the potential side effects, poor insurance reimbursement, the need to monitor the blood throughout therapy, and the high recurrence rate. Patients with liver or heart disease generally should not take these medications. The cost of a 2-3 month course of anti-fungal medication can be astronomical. Typically a full course of medication costs anywhere between $1000-$2,000 US dollars and only cures 40-60 percent of cases in one course of treatment. This does not include the cost of doctor's office visits, blood work or laboratory nail fungus analysis. Many people will require several courses of one or more prescription medications with enormous expense and little guarantee of success.
Some insurance companies will reimburse for toenail fungus or nail fungus treatment, however many require documentation of secondary problems beyond the mere presence of the fungal infection before they will cover the costs of anti-fungal medications. Typically you must have documented toenail pain or dysfunction as insurance companies consider yellow, discolored or even disfigured nails to be merely a cosmetic condition.
